Ready for the energy transition.

DEKOTEC corrosion protection products are H2-ready!

Hydrogen (H2) is a key element in the reduction of greenhouse gases, as H2 enables the energy industry in many European countries to switch to low-carbon (CO2) technologies or become climate-neutral. H2 is produced by electrolysis, i.e. the splitting of water into its components oxygen and hydrogen. If the energy required for this process is generated by renewable energy sources such as wind, water or sun, it is referred to as "green hydrogen", which is CO2-neutral.

The utilisation of the element with the high energy density is advantageous due to another important fact: the infrastructure for transporting hydrogen is largely in place. According to the DVGW (German standardisation body for the gas and water industry), the majority of German gas network pipelines are already H2-ready, storage facilities can be converted and only selected systems and components need to be adapted. There is therefore little to prevent a switch to hydrogen.

DEKOTEC is prepared: With the H2-ready seal, we prove the hydrogen suitability of our corrosion protection products. We are ready for the energy transition!

Intensive tests were carried out in the DEKOTEC laboratory to verify this. Specifically, BUTYLEN PE/butyl tapes & tape systems, SEALID® All-in-1 Tape, PLASTELEN® Petrolatum tapes, DEKOTEC® Shrink sleeves and VivaxCoat® Protection systems for wet surfaces were tested.

Examination structure and procedure:

1. The product samples were divided equally between two desiccators.

  • Reference desiccator (Ref): Sample storage in an air atmosphere (Fig. 1 and 2).
  • Desiccator H2: sample storage in hydrogen gas. Procedure: Evacuation with water jet pump, subsequent flooding with hydrogen gas to normal pressure using a gas balloon and 3-way stopcock. Carried out several times to ensure a complete exchange of atmosphere (Fig. 3).

2. The samples were stored in both desiccators for several days, during which the atmosphere exchange in desiccator H2 was repeated daily.

3. Finally, the samples were removed from the desiccators and individual tests were carried out in accordance with the leading international standards ISO 21809-3 and EN 12068.

Clear result:

DEKOTEC corrosion protection products achieve a consistent performance after exposure to a hydrogen atmosphere (H2) compared to an air atmosphere (Ref). In particular, the tests carried out in accordance with the ISO 21809-3 and EN 12068 standards for the key product properties of tape strength, elongation at break and peel strength remain constant. This means that our products can be used without hesitation as passive corrosion protection on pipes in which hydrogen is transported.
